The Life Of Riley - with Jackie Gleason - Vol. 1

THE LIFE OF RILEY (1949) has an interesting history for that it is remembered, if at all, solely as the role created by William Bendix. This in part is true, for that Bendix did originate the role of Chester A. Riley on radio in 1944. Although it's been said that he was unavailable to star in the TV series in 1949, he did get to star as Riley in the 1949 Universal-International movie version of that same name with Rosemary DeCamp as his wife, Peg. As for the TV series, the Dumont network substituted the unavailable Bendix for the not-so-well-known Jackie Gleason as Riley. After 26 episodes, the series was cancelled in early 1950.

Life With Elizabeth - Vol. 1

Life with Elizabeth told the story of married couple Elizabeth and Alvin (played by Del Moore). It was an unusual program in several respects, not the least of which was its twenty-eight year old co-creator, producer, and star. White was one of only two women in the early days of television to wield creative control both in front of and behind the camera. A second distinctive feature of the program were its non-linear stories--each episode consisted of three vignettes, three different plots. Betty White earned her first Emmy in 1952 for Life with Elizabeth.

1952 - 55 • BW • 30 Minutes Per Episode - 4 Episodes: "Tree In The Freeway/First Kiss/Old Boyfriend," "Stolen Car/Patio Gate/Mountain Cabin," "Morning Grouch/Shopping/A Taxing Day," "Mama Visits/Picnic/Nosy Neighbor."
