Written by Leonard Lewis Levinson, was one of broadcast history's earliest spin-off programs. Built around Throckmorton Philharmonic Gildersleeve, a character who had been a staple on Fibber McGee and Molly, was first Introduced in a 1932 broadcast. The Great Gildersleeve enjoyed its greatest success in the 1940s. Actor Harold Peary played the character during its transition from the parent show into the spin-off and later in a quartet of feature films released at the height of the show's popularity.

On Fibber McGee and Molly, Harold Peary's Gildersleeve was a pompous windbag who became a consistent McGee nemesis. "You're a haa-aa-aa-aard man, McGee!" became Gildersleeve's catchphrase. He soon became so popular that Kraft Foods decided to sponsore the Great Gildersleeve in his own show. The name “Gildersleeve” was said to be selected because it was the most pompous name the writers could think of. The first Life of Riley radio show was a summer replacement show heard on CBS from April 12, 1941 to September 6, 1941. The CBS program starred Lionel Stander as J. Riley Farnsworth and had no real connection with the more famous series that followed a few years later. The radio program starring William Bendix as Riley initially aired on the Blue Network, later known as ABC, from January 16, 1944 to June 8, 1945. Then it moved to NBC, where it was broadcast from September 8, 1945 to June 29, 1951.

Mr. President ran on the ABC Network from June 26, 1947 to September 23, 1953. Each half-hour episode was based on an incident in the life of one of the people who have held the office of President of the United States. The scripts were written in such a way as not to reveal the name of the President until the last line of dialog at the end of the program, when the President would be revealed. The audience was thus encouraged to guess, from the plot of the episode, which President it was.

Raleigh Cigarettes offered Skelton his own show on NBC in 1941, giving him the chance to present a full range of comedic characters.
